What's in a Brand Name?

"I don't wear designer clothes [because] they are too expensive," explained Kirsy Rodriguez, a Lehman junior.
Rodriguez isn't alone. Many students worry about paying for their textbooks, tuition and transportation. As a result, they can't afford pricey fashions. Some students believe that designer clothing has longevity. Most designer clothes cost more because they are made with the highest quality fabric, craftsmanship, and follow the latest trends in fashion.
"Name brands are all about being commercial and materialistic," said Kimberly Dejesus, a Lehman junior.
Like Dejesus, some people believe that many fashionistas (males included) wear name brands because they want to get noticed.
"[Some People] want to imitate certain images that they see in the entertainment [business] and in the media," said Lehman sophomore Augusto Alarcon.
Alarcon said that the style and comfort are two of the main priorities that he has when shopping for clothes.
"I usually try to buy things that other people don't have," Dejesus explained.
A few designers recognize that some shoppers want to wear their brand, but can't afford it. That's why many have created two different clothing lines to satisfy both types of customers. Thrifty stores like Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, and H&M carry clothing that is both chic and affordable.
"When shopping I consider the season, price, and durability," said Lehman sophomore Jamie Tan.
There are several steps that you should keep in mind while shopping for quality or trend. Impulse buying will only lead to wasted money and a closet full of fads. Buying designer items that have emblazed designs and logos limit the amount of times you can wear them.
You should always shop around. Go to a variety of stores and compare prices. Shop online and in catalogues to find deals. If you really love a piece from a designer, find something similar at a more affordable clothing store.
