In order to perform at their best, athletes must keep themselves in top physical shape.

This usually consists of working out often. That isn’t the only thing that is required of athletes though.

Brion Moss is a Lehman graduate student who studies physical fitness and nutrition. He is always taking advantage of his membership at the Apex working out, and training other students in physical fitness.

He is qualified to train people in weight training, Olympic lifts, cardio workouts, and endurance. He currently works at the YMCA as a certified personal trainer.

Moss also works as a cook at one of his part time jobs with the NYC Department of Health where he prepares conscious and healthy meals. Moss said that athletes should eat “a balanced diet of complex carbohydrates, veggies, and fruits with skin-on when possible.”

He said that while fruits are full of sugar, just like candy, fruits are also full of vital minerals, vitamins and fiber. This makes them a much better choice than regular candy.

Moss advises athletes to stay away from sugary sweets. He said, “If you eat trash then you’ll perform like trash.”

Athletes also need protein such as poultry, fish, beef and pork. They just need to make sure it is lean protein, and contrary to popular belief, fats should also be consumed.

Most people believe that training hard and eating properly are the most important things for athletes to do. That is not the case according to Moss. One of the most important things for athletes to do is make sure they get a lot of rest.

“A lot of athletes suffer from one of mankind’s greatest common attribute: ‘Work hard all the time,’” he said. “Too much hard work with out periods of light activity and rest can lead to injuries.”

It is also important to keep sports in the proper context. Moss said that “taking the sport too serious can lead to again, over-work, depression, physical body issues and other problems.” Sports should not be the only outlet for people. It is good to have hobbies other than sports.

Athletes all around the world utilize these tips in order to stay at the top of their game, and aspiring athletes should take notice of these tips.

They may help to inspire athletes to succeed in their sport and also help them maintain a healthy life.
